WebAR (web-based augmented reality)

WebAR is augmented reality that runs inside a smartphone's web browser, such as Safari or Chrome, instead of a downloaded app. A visitor scans a QR code, taps a link or an NFC tag, allows camera access, and the AR experience loads in seconds, removing the app-store step that stops most people from trying AR.

Also known as: Web AR, browser AR, web-based AR, app-free AR, AR without an app

How it works

WebAR uses browser technology (WebGL for 3D graphics, access to the camera and motion sensors, and computer vision running in the page) to track the world and draw content over the camera view. Experiences are hosted like web pages, so they can be updated instantly and shared anywhere a link can go.

How it works in illust

Every illust experience is WebAR. Visitors open ar.illust.space or a creator's link, allow camera, motion and location access, and see the work. No app or account is needed to view.

FAQ

Does WebAR work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. WebAR runs in Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android. The visitor allows camera and motion access, plus location for place-based pieces.

Is WebAR as good as app-based AR?

For art, events and marketing, usually yes, and far more people will actually open it. Native apps still have an edge for heavy games and long sessions, but the gap has narrowed as mobile browsers have gotten faster.
