AR marketing (brand activations)

AR marketing uses augmented reality to engage people at a place, event or product, through interactive pop-ups, festival quests, murals that come alive or packaging that plays content. A brand activation is one such live experience. It works best when it gives people something worth sharing, not just a tech demo.

Shopify Presents Heatonist and Henbo's "Monsterverse" Shopify hosted a pop-up at its New York retail space (March 31 to April 2) showcasing Heatonist with artwork by creative director Henbo; illust provided the AR, geofencing, data collection, and proof-of-presence tools.

How it works

Brands pick a moment (a launch, festival or store opening), a trigger (location, image, face, QR or NFC) and a payoff (a reveal, reward or photo moment). Campaigns often combine on-site signage, social sharing and a follow-up offer.

How it works in illust

illust powers AR campaigns with artists, brands and agencies, from Shopify x Heatonist's Monsterverse pop-up in New York to Vibe Check at ETHDenver. On average, visitors spend more than a minute engaging with an illust AR scene. Brands can self-serve in the AR Studio or work with illust's creative services team.

FAQ

Do activations need a custom app?

Rarely. WebAR opens from a QR code or link, which removes the download step that stops most people.

How long does an activation take to build?

Simple scenes can go live in days with a no-code studio; custom 3D and multi-stop quests take longer.
